Product Description This book (for Windows and Mac) breaks new ground by doing something for digital photographers that’s never been done before—it cuts through the bull and shows you exactly “how to do it.” It’s not a bunch of theory; it doesn’t challenge you to come up with your own settings or figure things out on your own. Instead, it does something that virtually no other Elements book has ever done—it tells you flat-out which settings to use, when to use them, and why. If you’re looking for one of those “tell-me-everything-about-the-Unsharp-Maskfilter” books, this isn’t it. You can grab any other Elements book on the shelf, because they all do that. Instead, this book gives you the inside tips and tricks of the trade for organizing, correcting, editing, sharpening, retouching, and presenting your photos like a pro. You’ll be absolutely amazed at how easy and effective these techniques are—once you know the secrets.
You’ll learn:
- The real secrets of how the pros retouch portraits
- How to color correct any photo without breaking a sweat (you’ll be amazed at how they do it!)
- How to use Camera Raw for processing not only RAW photos, but JPEGs and TIFFs, too! (And you’ll learn why so many pros like it best— because it’s faster and easier)
- The sharpening techniques the pros really use (there’s an entire chapter just on this!)
- How to deal with common digital camera image problems, including removing noise and avoiding halos
- The most requested photographic special effects, and much more!
The Book's Secret Weapon Although Elements 8 offers some digital photography features that Photoshop CS4 doesn’t offer, there are plenty of features that Photoshop CS4 has that Elements 8 still doesn’t have (things like paths, Channel Mixer, etc.). But in this book, you’ll learn some slick workarounds, cheats, and some fairly ingenious ways to replicate many of those Photoshop features from right within Elements. Plus, since this book is designed for photographers, it doesn’t waste your time talking about how to frame a shot, setting your exposure, etc., and there’s no talk about which camera or printer to buy. It’s all Elements, step-by-step, cover-to-cover, in the only book of its kind!

Great Photoshop Elements 8 additonal training book December 27, 2009 Thule1 (Virginia, usa) 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
This book is not for learning how to use the basics of Photoshop Elements 8. I also bought the Missing Manual for the basic instructions. Scott Kilby is an expert in photographjy and offers some really neat insights and tips on getting better pictues from using Photoshop Elements 8. I hgihly recommend the book as an add-on training guide.

Great Buy! January 26, 2010 C. J. Raines (Bay City, MI, USA) This book is an incredible value when you consider the HUGE amount of information it contains. Kloskowski and Kelby do an excellent job showing us how to do everything from cropping to removal of bad acne, including tons of things I would have never thought of doing to my pictures. I am impressed, especially for the cheap price.
Great Tutorial Book for Photographers February 10, 2010 J. Shetley I thought this was a great book. I have previous experience editing photos on a Windows PC with Paint Shop Pro and recently switched to a MAC - so I needed a new photo application. I chose PSE8 and got this book to speed up the learning curve. What a great book. Almost all the photos in the book are available at Kelby's on-line site for download so you can follow along in the book with the same pictures he uses in each tutorial. The lessons are short and to the point. I just sat at the computer with the book and did each lesson step by step. Lots of great ideas in here and all are geared toward photographers who need to touch up their photos. This book will have you zooming around PSE8 in no time editing like a pro. I was amazed at all functionality included in PSE8 - it is an amazing application. I had no idea it was so good. And this book really shows off all the great features included in the application.
If you really have no prior photo editing experience and have no clue what the tools are or how to use them, you probably need to start with something more basic. This book does assume some experience on the part of the reader. But if you are thinking about upgrading to PSE8 or switching from some other application - this book will really speed things up for you. Plus - his writing style is just plain fun. It was very enjoyable to read and do the exercises along with the book. I keep it on my desk for reference now - in case I forget something cool he covered in the book.
Got Me Up to Speed Quickly February 13, 2010 Wurzburg (Rolling Meadows, IL United States) I bought Elements 8 and soon realized that I needed help. This book teaches how to use Elements 8 to process images for exposure, lighting, color, contrast, sharpness, etc. Additionally, it teaches quite a number of creative techniques such as fixing mistakes and removing unwanted objects and people. The book teaches by walking through examples on a step-by-step basis. Of course, it can't show you how to solve every possible problem that way, but after a sufficient number of examples, you will start getting the hang of how to think your way through the next one. I now understand layers sufficiently to start solving problems on my own.
This is not intended to be a reference book nor a technical manual. One of those would be an excellent complement. Overall I give it a very high grade. I would definitely buy this book again and I recommend it for Photoshop beginners and intermediates.
